Setting up the model

Set the needles on a glow or gas engine

Use the microphone as a tachometer to set the high- and low-speed needles, and keep a log of what works.

Written for iPhone. The steps are the same on iPad.

What you need

  • A glow or gas aircraft in the hangar
  • A helper or a stand that holds the model securely
  • Hearing protection

Steps

  1. Open Bench and tap Engine tuning. Or open a glow or gas aircraft and tap Engine tuning under Bench.
  2. Set the engine's strokes, cylinders and prop blades once. Maiden needs them to turn the sound into RPM.
  3. Put the iPhone on the ground behind the prop, never beside or in front of it, and tap Start listening.
  4. Under Peak, lean the high-speed needle slowly until the RPM stops rising. Maiden holds the peak.
  5. Richen the needle until the drop from peak reaches the target. Then try Pinch and Nose-up.
  6. Type the needle turns and tap Save session. Turn on Runs well to start from these settings next time.

Good to know

  • Readings need a clear engine sound. Wind, other engines or a iPhone too far away make them unreliable.
  • The pinch test and nose-up check are hints. Your engine's manual has the final word.
  • Hot days and high fields raise the density altitude, which makes an engine run richer.

If it doesn't work

Microphone access is off
Tap Open Settings and turn on Microphone for Maiden.
The reading jumps around
Move the iPhone closer to the engine and out of the wind. Check the strokes and cylinders too.
